To keep the machine (reservoir, mask and hose) clean you probably just use dish washing liquid and water at regular intervals. This will undoubtedly remove the superficial dirt and the machine may appear clean to the naked eye. But this process will not kill the microscopic organisms that have been accumulating on the breathing machine! Cleaning the machine with strong disinfectants to destroy germs is not at all advisable.
On the other hand, the Soclean is designed to destroy all the microbial germs that have accumulated on the machine with regular usage. SoClean is easy to use and have a high efficiency quotient. It act as an impenetrable barrier against germs so that the patient’s health is not compromised.
What Is A Soclean?
The SoClean is a machine that automatically sanitizes the CPAP equipment, constituting the mask, the connecting hose and the reservoir. It does not use water and soap in the cleaning process. Therefore, there is no condensation of water on the CPAP equipment. At the end of the sanitization cycle the machine is dry and is ready for immediate use.
The SoClean generates ozone (or activated oxygen), which remains within the sanitization chamber in a continuous loop. Using ozone in the cleaning process ensures that your CPAP machine is completely free of microscopic germs that cause respiratory disorders and other diseases.
Why Is It Important To Clean The CPAP Machine?
According to the December 2007 report published in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine and released by the US National Library of Medicine (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2556912/):
“Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), aside from resulting in the debilitating effect of fatigue derived from disrupted sleep, can lead to increased morbidity and mortality.”
Therefore, one can deduce that a good night’s rest is a crucial part of a healthy lifestyle. In fact, the findings show that insufficient sleep due to sleep apnea could mean an early grave!
Being a patient diagnosed with sleep apnea you obviously have a CPAP machine for home use. Keeping the CPAP equipment free of infestation becomes equally imperative in order to ensure that you are breathing clean air throughout the night.
If you do not have a family history of respiratory infections, you may be of the opinion that a rudimentary clean-up with liquid soap may be quite sufficient. But if there is anyone in your family who has recurring respiratory problems like strep throat, pneumonia, flu, cold, etc you might have a strong tendency towards developing these health issues.
Cleaning and sanitizing the CPAP means you are destroying the disease-causing microscopic organisms present on the machine. Hence, maintaining a properly sanitized CPAP machine becomes very necessary to keep diseases at bay. Cleaning the CPAP with the help of a SoClean is a simple process and is not at all time-consuming.

The Soclean usually does not come under the purview of any medical insurance schemes. So you have to dip into your savings to purchase one. Besides this, you will incur additional expenditure on items like:
- Neutralizer or a pre-wash – this is used to wash the mask and hose before you load them in the SoClean 2 sanitization chamber. A bottle of pre-wash solution comes free only with the initial purchase of the equipment. You have to pay upfront for subsequent purchases.
- Replacement kit – this kit contains injection and check valve assembly. Only one injection-check valve kit is free with purchase of the SoClean so that you can use it immediately. But you will need to replace these items once in six months.
- Adapter – Depending on the brand of your CPAP equipment, you will have to purchase a compatible adapter to connect the hose.
Benefits Of Using The Soclean
Since you are using a CPAP machine at night, you are already suffering from sleep apnea. You definitely do not wish to add to your troubles by contracting respiratory ailments caused by re-inhalation of microbial organisms accumulated on the machine.
The use of a SoClean will ensure that nearly 99.99% of the disease-causing microorganisms breeding on the CPAP mask and tubing are completely destroyed. The sanitization process also rids the reservoir of all forms of infection-causing germs. This will in turn ensure that the air you breathe while sleeping at night is absolutely pure and uncontaminated.
When you are leading a busy professional and personal life, you may not have time to wash the CPAP mask, reservoir and tubing on a regular basis. What will be the long term effect of this unavoidable neglect? The motor of the CPAP unit will have to work that much harder to help you to breathe clean air through the night.
A machine that is clogged with residue will have a short life. You will have to spend more money and purchase a replacement CPAP machine within a few years. Cleaning and sanitising your CPAP equipment at regular intervals will ensure that it works at an optimum level of efficiency and also delays the necessity of buying the replacement.
Well maintained CPAP equipment means you don’t need to take days off from work too often due to poor health. During the night, when you inhale through sanitized breathing machine you remain healthy and fit. It has a direct impact on your short-term earnings as well as the long term financial gains.
Your sleep cycle will definitely improve with the help of a sanitized and clean CPAP machine. Your breath will become steady and rhythmic when you sleep at night. Better sleep means better overall health, more energy and improved efficiency at the workplace. So a properly sanitized CPAP mask has a direct impact on your performance quotient and professional reputation.
When you sleep at night the body repairs its damaged tissues. A deep and relaxed sleep pattern will ensure that the natural process of self-healing and regeneration of tissue takes place without interruption.
When the level of oxygen inhaled into the system is optimum the blood vessels are healthy. By association, all the major organs too get sufficient oxygen and remain in a healthy condition. This prevents other medical conditions like renal failure, asthma, pleurisy, cardio-vascular diseases, digestive-tract infections, etc. When you sanitize the CPAP parts you are ensuring that you remain healthy.
The SoClean doesn’t use chemicals or cleaning agents for the sanitization process. This is especially beneficial for those who are prone to sinusitis; which is a medical condition that is triggered by strong odours. The symptoms can cause a lot of discomfort. The SoClean is designed to use a non-fragrant, chemical-free, active oxygen sanitization cycle that doesn’t leave any lingering smell on the CPAP mask or machine.
A clogged CPAP mask will make you feel uncomfortable when you are inhaling through the mask. Even when you are apparently asleep you will feel restless and will wake up in the morning feeling tired. Lack of sufficient sleep can lead to stress, irritability, loss of self-esteem, unprovoked anger and the inability to be a good leader or team player. Whereas, a relaxed and undisturbed sleep pattern will definitely promote emotional well being.
Does The Soclean Really Work?
There are skeptics who feel that purchasing a SoClean and all the add-ons (like replacement kit, adapter, etc) is a waste of money. The usual dishwashing solution and a good rinse are more than sufficient to keep the CPAP mask clean and free of germs.
In reality, this process of washing will only do a superficial cleansing of the mask, hose and reservoir. The machine will not be free of the microscopic germs that have accumulated with regular usage.
The Microchem Laboratory, Texas, carried out disinfection efficacy testing of the SoClean 2 in October 2017. These are the findings:
- Disinfection testing was undertaken against various forms of microorganisms, some of which were already resistant to antibiotics.
- Despite this, the results showed an extremely high level of efficacy, with the SoClean producing a 99.99% germ-free environment.
These are the technical specifications:
- 6 lbs – Light weight and easy to carry
- 5 length x 6.5 width x 8.5 height (inches) – Compact size and portable
- 4 feet 8 inches long cord – Length gives sufficient leverage to select a suitable electric power point in the room
- 12 VDC – Type of electric current
- 5 Watts – Power consumed is minimal.
- It is compatible with all the existing makes/models of CPAP machines.
- It is registered with the Food & Drug Administration (regulatory authority).
- It has a user-friendly interface and cycle-indicator display.
- It doesn’t require chemicals for the sanitization process.
- The sanitization process is odourless and dry.
What Is Included With Soclean 2 Cleaner?
When you purchase the SoClean, it comes with some free items that you will need immediately. They include the following:
- A bottle of pre-wash – You need to use this before you use the SoClean for the first time. It eliminates any traces of odours, detergents or residues that may have accumulated on the SoClean during the manufacturing process. If there are strong lingering odours, they will react with the ozone (activated oxygen) during the sanitization process.
Note: Never pour the pre-wash directly into the SoClean. Please refer to step 1 of the user guide given below on how to use the pre-wash solution.
- One cartridge filter – This comes into play once the actual sanitization is over. It converts the ozone back into regular oxygen.
- Injection fitting and check valve assembly – This attachment prevents the moisture from the humidifier reservoir from entering the SoClean.
- One AC electric power adapter
- One detachable slot plug for inserting the hose.
Step-By-Step User Guide For The Soclean
The SoClean is user-friendly equipment and can be set up quickly. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to set up and use it:-
Setting up SoClean 2
Step 1: Mix the pre-wash (1/4 quantity from the bottle provided with the equipment) in about 3.5 Liters of water. Immerse reservoir, mask and hose in this solution for a while and rinse the items thoroughly. This step remains the same irrespective of whether you are using a humidifier or not.
Step 2: Extricate the short length of the hose from the injection fitting.
Step 3: Attach the injection fitting to the CPAP machine directly and connect the injection fitting end to the CPAP tubing.
Step 2: Separate the CPAP tubing from its machine.
Step 3: Insert the injection fitting into the reservoir port while ensuring that the small hose is quite close to the bottom of the reservoir. If the small hose is too long and doesn’t fit in the reservoir comfortably, you can trim the end a little to make it fit. The small tubing should not touch the bottom or the opening of the tube will be blocked.
Common steps for setting up the SoClean with/without humidifier:
Step 4: Attach the AC adapter to the SoClean.
Step 5: Connect it to the power supply.
Step 6: If you want to change the default timer settings, you can press the clock button and change the settings. The preset time is 10AM start and a sanitization cycle of 7 minutes.
Note: In case you have a problem with the electricity while the sanitization process in going on, you will only have to reset the time for the current cycle. Your daily pre-set cycle will remain unchanged.
Operating the SoClean 2 (your daily routine):
Step 7: Now that SoClean 2 has been set up, place the face mask in the sanitization chamber, such that the tubing attached to the mask passes through the hose slot.
Step 8: Close the lid and press start. The machine will follow the sanitization cycle as per the default factory settings or as per the time you have just set.
Tips for using SoClean 2:
Understanding the indicator lights:
The illuminated bar below the timer shows the stage at which the cleaning cycle has reached. When the light is red the SoClean is generating ozone or activated oxygen into the chamber. A yellow light indicates that the activated oxygen is being slowly converted back into normal oxygen. This takes 2 hours and the CPAP machine must remain in the sanitizer during the process.
When the light turns green in colour the cycle is complete. Now it is safe to open the lid and remove the germ-free hose, mask and reservoir. The light indicator will go off as soon as you lift the lid.
The SoClean is designed to detect if the sanitization chamber does not contain any machine for cleaning. In which case the machine will display a message and alert you of the fact. It will not start a cleaning cycle unnecessarily.
Important safety precautions:
Never try to dismantle SoClean. Also, never immerse it in a pool, sink or tub of water. Do not keep the SoClean in the vicinity of inflammable, toxic or compressed gases. Many gases have a corrosive effect and can harm the SoClean, rendering it unsuitable for use.
Never place any items other than the CPAP machine in the chamber, especially things made of natural rubber or nylon. These materials react with the ozone generated inside the chamber and are permanently destroyed. And more importantly, this will damage the SoClean.
Ideally, you need to replace the injection fitting and valve assembly once in 6 months. But you must replace it earlier than that if you notice water in the tube. Another safety precaution involves the cycle timing. If you want to customize the sanitization cycle for more than the default 7 minutes, make sure you set it for a period less than 30 minutes.
Let me remind that your SoClean is not covered by Medicare. It has cost you a hefty sum of money. So you need to keep pets and children away from the equipment in order to prevent inadvertent damage. Besides, curious kids or pets could hurt themselves if the equipment falls down from its perch.
Understanding the message display of SoClean 2:
Message: “Hose not present. Cycle will not run”
This would indicate one of three things – (1) the sanitization chamber is empty, (2) the lid of the SoClean is not shut properly, or (3) that slot plug for the hose in either not fixed properly or is not attached at all.
Message: “Order filter kit”
You can expect to see this message on the SoClean 2 display-screen every six months. It is an important reminder that you need to place an order for a replacement filter and check valve kit.
The Simplicity Of Cleaning Your Soclean
Medical equipment usually requires specialized cleaning and maintenance. This is because a person’s health and life are dependent on its optimal operation. What make the SoClean unique is that it is a low-maintenance machine. You just need a moist cloth to wipe it clean. Please refrain from using any chemical agents, detergents or liquid soaps to clean the SoClean.
What’s Different About The Soclean 2 Go CPAP Travel Model?
Whether you are travelling for work or pleasure, you visit public places like airports, train-bus terminals, airplanes, malls, museums, offices, restaurants, etc. Wherever you go you collect germs and disease-carrying microbes on your skin, hair and clothes. You inhale millions of microorganism and exhale them into the mask, tubing and reservoir.
A frequent traveler’s life is stressful to say the least! Travelling with a CPAP machine can be even more complicated and cumbersome. Carrying the SoClean as well as well as a CPAP will add to the load you are carrying. But an un-sanitized machine is definitely not an acceptable alternative.
The latest model of SoClean 2 Go CPAP Travel is designed specifically to answer the needs of frequent travelers who are dependent on the CPAP machine. It is much lighter and sleeker than the other two regular models. It weighs just one lb compared to the two home models (5 lbs) and it is much smaller in size.
SoClean 2 Go CPAP Travel too works on battery power. And most important of all – it has the same level of efficacy (99.99%) in making the CPAP machine completely free of bacteria, viruses and mould. It is also more compact, only 4” long, 4” wide and 5” high.
Where to buy?
Currently, the SoClean 2 available on Amazon and Soclean Official Website.
